The hard-fought tournament was complemented with laughs, music, and frisbee comradery. Ruckus welcomed each team with a unique poster with the teams personalized logo on it. Both Watertower and Poteat Fields were brimming with joy.
In the end, the high school club team Triangle Tourists, won first place. Following University of Virginia Hydra, placed second. Full results below…
Another year brings the annual Hit the Bricks event, hosted by WFU to raise funds for the Brian Piccolo Cancer Research Fund. This year our tent was equipped with ample seating for our runners to briefly rest on, before quickly taking the backpack and student ID for another lap. The new Rucktoberfest discs also made a showing for the first time. They were seen flying around the center of the quad when new frisbee players arrived from class. The day was long and we ran again...an undetermined number of laps. The money raised was for an exceptional cause and the day long sprint workout we received will soon show on the field.
As a family of frisbee players, we know how important family is! Members of Wombukus in Winston-Salem this summer, came together to volunteer at our local Ronald-McDonald House. The experience not only made our family stronger, but also gave those in our local community a warm meal to eat.
After graduating Work Forest, Soo was picked up by the All-Star Ultimate Tour the summer of 2016. She travelled across the country for five weeks with a group of hand selected ultimate women, competing against women's club teams from around the US. Along the way, alumni and current WOMBUKUS members cheered her on, in her journey across the country. As many Wake Forest students do, Soo aspired to learn more, leading her to graduate school programs. Soo was accepted into UNChapel Hill's graduate program. This moment was both joyous and soul crushing for most of Ruckus. In one sense, our close friend and faithful leader Soo got into the program she had aspired for and rightfully deserved. On the other hand, we all were aware that we were now to play with Soo once again on the field, but this time as her opponent. How could we play against the girl that had humbly lead our team for so long? The thought of considering Soo as the "other team" was completely against our nature.
Throughout the 2016-2017 season Pleiades A team and Ruckus did not face a single match against one another, till the faithful end. In the DI college sectionals held in Winston-Salem, NC, Pleiades A team and Ruckus played one another. Soo played against Ruckus; Ruckus played against Soo. At first it stung, but for a short while Ruckus was once again playing with their fearless leader Soo, even if it was as her opponent. For Pleiades went on to play in the 2017 DI nationals (Ruckus fully supports the claim that it was because of Soo they achieved such greatness). Soo went on to be placed on the #1 women's 2017 All-Region Team on the Atlantic Coast. Soo's career as a student athlete will again come to a close when her five year eligibility runs out at the end of 2017; however, her greatness will not end here. The positive direction ultimate frisbee as a sport is taking, making its way to the Olympics', we fully expect to see Lindsay Soo grow and continue to be the SOOper Star she is. With love, Ruckus. Project Pumpkin this year was a blast! Our table was decorated in yellow, flooded with candy, and well equipped with numerous frisbees for a simple game of throw the frisbee through the hola-hoop. The warm fall weather kept everyone comfortable in their costumes. Once again WOMBUKUS had the most active and welcoming table with numerous penguins and pandas wandering around. As seen, our favourite senior Zipper is pictured with former coach Shelly's young unicorn son.
Wake Forest brought the MF Ruckus and broke seed at the Tar Heel Tune-Up, hosted by UNC Chapel Hill! Highlights included beauuuutiful layouts from the likes of Mary Layton "Moff" Moffitt and EK Womack, dancing to "Everytime We Touch," and defensive blocks from almost every player. The rookies wowed everyone on the sidelines with their pro skillz and Soo+Beans proved to be a winning connection (surprise, surprise). Amanda "Beans" Murphy was undoubtedly the MVBeans of the tournament, risking life and limb to get the D. Ruckus went 3-3 and got 4th overall in the tournament. Play for play updates from Alumna and Chief Videographer Mary Helen Simpson (she also films weddings and bar mitzvahs) can be found at https://twitter.com/wfruckus. More to come soon!
